THE STRATUS Modular Services Company has be creating, developing and producing booms since the year 2000. The Stratus Boom has been refined and artfully shaped through the years to get to the product that it is today. Over the last 10 years MSC has researched and observed critical care areas to learn how the Stratus could support the bedside environment. We wanted to create a product solution that nurtured a more functional physical environment. The Stratus enhances clinical function through motion.
Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) began the planning and design process for the B3C (Building for the Third Century) project in 2005. Shortly after the planning and design process began, Modular was asked to present our solutions to the design team along with other manufacturers. They had very specific requirements for the booms early on. These requirements included service layout, function, and movement. For instance, the booms needed to have the capability of switching locations from one side to the other. The respiratory boom needed to be designed at a certain height so the ventilator could be placed underneath it. The reach of the arms needed to be long enough to be tucked into the corner, but short enough to travel behind the bed. Because this is the Building for the Third Century, the hospital needed to plan not only for their current need but also future needs. So, the service capacity of the booms became important as well as the ability to add additional services in the future. Modular worked closely with the design team on these requirements and supported the hospital throughout the process. Our support included mock ups, renderings, animations, technical support, site visits, etc. The team looked at multiple options, including the use of two different boom companies in one room, to achieve specific needs for the new NeuroICU rooms. Ultimately, Modular was the only company to present a boom solution that addressed all of their major requirements and then some. Instead of telling the customer we could not achieve what they wanted, we worked with them to understand why they needed it. Then, our team at Modular worked to create a solution that addressed the need. MGH installed 22 Dual Stratus booms in the Neuro ICU. The Lunder Building is slated to open this year and will mark the 200th anniversary of MGH. It's the third oldest hospital in the United States. |
